Importance of Databases for Accounting Information Systems

According to Simkin, Rose & Norman (2015), an accounting information system (AIS) can be described as a structure that a company employs to capture, store, process, manage, retrieve and report its fiscal data to be utilized by accountants, specialists, business analysts, chief financial officers (CFOs), directors, auditors and tax agencies. To store the data, AIS rely on a database structure for instance, SQL-structured query language. Therefore, Databases are important in AIS as once data is captured correctly; the data will be copied/retrieved accurately for use in every other record where it is required. Databases can be used to identify records uniquely and            link records to one another. In addition, AISs rely on databases for they are able to organize and store large volumes of data, reduce redundancy, increase consistency, filter and sort, as well as offer data security among other benefits.

Attributes on a Customer Table

In a customer table, the following are the attributes I would include: First name, last name, company, job title, business phone number, alternative phone number, physical address, zip code, e-mail address, postal address, and city.

What is a DBMS?

A DBMS, database management system is software application used by database developers to create and manage databases. They offer both programmers and users with a systematic approach to create, retrieve, revise, and manage data.

What is SQL?

According to ANSI (American National Standards Institute), SQL – structured query language is the standard language for relational database management systems. SQL statements are used to execute tasks such as update or retrieve data from a database. SQL enables a user to identify the table and fields they want to retrieve, using simple commands for example SELECT, FROM, and WHERE. Microsoft Access is also a database management system like SQL that creates and manipulates data (Simkin, Rose & Norman, 2015). It is used by small and middle-sized businesses to create and complete accounting systems.
