Mary is a 89 year old lady who is admitted to hospital following a fall in her sheltered accommodation. On assessment she complained of pain in her right leg and on examination there is a shortening and external rotation of her right limb indicative of a fractured femur. She has been admitted to A&E via the ambulance service unaccompanied by any carers or family.
She has previously been diagnosed with multi infarct dementia and macular degeneration.

Robert is a 32 year old physical education teacher who sustained a compound fracture of his tibia and fibula in a rugby match 10 weeks ago. He had internal fixation of the fracture followed by a rehabilitation programme.
