INSTRUCTIONS:

This can be only 1 and a half page. More instructions will be on the attach file. I just sent more information about the stories for the paper. I`m not sure if you can find those stories to write the paper or not, if not then I will take pictures out from the book and attach them again. Thank you

To consider the role of word choice in creating a vivid story. To analyze and discuss the importance of your chosen word. To create a persuasive argument about why your chosen word is so important. To discuss the role of the word choice for the story in general

Great stories may seem like they are conjured by the author out of thin air, but in fact they are constructed with the same alphabet and punctuation that we all know and use. At the most basic level, stories are a series of decisions made by the author. As such, in this essay you will explore and analyze one very important word choice made by the author, trying to persuade the reader that the particular word holds importance for the story as a whole

Read “The Disappeared” and “An Adventure in Paris.” Engage in active reading with the stories (previewing, highlighting, and annotating). Review your notes and decide on the most important word choice in each story. Then, for EACH story, do the following:

  • Copy the entire sentence wherein the word is located and bold your chosen word. Include page numbers for the sentence (and any other quotations you feel may be relevant to your discussion). Example: “What he first noticed about Detroit and therefore America was the smell” (109).

Write a significant paragraph (100-150 words) discussing why you believe the author’s choice of a particular word is the most important in the story. In the example above, you would discuss why the word “smell” is the most important. You may want to think about the following questions: How is the word different from similar words? What make the particular word so unique and interesting? What importance does the word have to the particular sentence and paragraph in which it is located? What importance does it have to the story as a whole?
