Synopsis of the chapter
Today’s world is characterized with various computing trends to improve connectivity to the internet. One notable trend that is being applied to improve this connectivity is the use of routers. Mike Meyers reviewed the use of routers in one chapter of his book guide to managing and troubleshooting networks; he offers various trends that guide the use of routers today. He begins by noting how different forms of routers work by using the hardware and the software. He notes that routers often send packets based on a destination IP address.
Some of the most common routers in today’s world are Cisco 2600, but as his outline, notes there are others such as cisco 2611 and Linksys. The simplest form of routers are those applied at home and small businesses, but their role as Mike comments is the same and it is to strip layer two data, queue it in a common format and to join two or more networks.
Each of the technology applied in routing relies on their size and the internet needs of an organization. As Mike notes, these needs are replicated on the configuration adopted by considering the protocols that guide them. Under dynamic routing, Mike notes routers adopt two static routes, that is the manually entered and those that are detected by the setup. Interesting, even with such routes, there are different routing protocols that are applied and they rely on different metrics such as latency, bandwidth, and the cost. Each router always considers a specific dimensional array, which consists of distances or costs. Essentially, under computing, this is referred to as Distance vector routing.
Configuring process requires various tools depending on the router being installed, for home routers, only power, and plug in are applied, while in business class, power, connection and racking is the process. Other activities that follow the use of routers mostly rely on cabling, making prompts to monitor progress, and setting up of network management portals. Mike recommends that individuals who manage these networks to learn basic essentials such as router configuration, setting up other devices such as computers, and being able to use the basic router tools such as trace route.
