Week 2 - Participation Activity 1(4 marks)

Requirements

Using the guidelines in ‘How to email your lecturer’ in the Week 2 readingon the Moodle website, write and send an email to your local lecturer from your CQU student email account. The body of the email should have two parts: a Personal Biography; and how you plan to use the knowledge and skills from this Unit in your future career. The email should be written in first person as you are writing about yourself. The message should include conventional elements such as a greeting at the beginning, a salutation at the end and an email signature containing your full name, student number, courseof study and your campus/workshop details. Note that a copy of the email MUST be uploaded into Moodle for marking purposes.

 

Part A - Personal Biography

You need to include in the email awell-structured“Personal Biography” (approximately 200words). The biography should contain an overview of your undergraduate education, work experience, and important achievements/milestones from your life that are not covered in the education or work aspects.

 

You may have gone straight from school to undergraduate study and then onto postgraduate study at university and have no work experience (including any past/present part time or volunteer jobs).  If that is your situation then you should explain why you have no work experience and briefly describe your plans for work in future. Similarly, this applies for theabsence of achievements/milestones.Write about your future plans.

 

Part B –Future Career Goals relating to COIT20249, and any questions or suggestions

The email should describe how you expect to use the skills and knowledge from COIT20249 to achieve your future career goals. You should link your plans with the relevant weekly topics from the Unit Moodle website/Unit Profile to identify your expectations. Another paragraph should include any questions and/or suggestions you may have about this Unit.

Part B should be about 200 words.

 

Submission

Upload a copy of the sent email to Moodle (in the form of a MS-Word document) to be marked. Add all the email header details, the content of the message and also a screenshot of your sent message to an MS-Word file and submit. Do not submit an image file only. Students will be penalised if there is no MS-Word file to mark as this enables the marker to provide feedback through Track Changes.When sending the email,include Parts A and B in the email itselfas part of the message andnot as a separate attachment.

 

If you use Outlook you can open the message and click “save as” and save the message as a text file that you can upload into Moodle – however the formatting will be lost so you will need to ensure that you edit it to make it easy to read and understand. Or you could copy and paste the header details and content of the message in a MS-Word file and also add a screenshot of your email to that file and upload into Moodle.

 

NOTES:

  • Recommend use of headings and paragraphs to clearly identify separate elements
  • Do not write minor details in part A. This is a semi-formal biography (similar to introducing a speaker) so only the key points should be provided.
  • No references are needed for this activity unless you are repeating this Unit in which case self-referencing is required. This is about you. Write in your own words.
  • A copy of the sent email has to be uploaded into Moodle to be marked.
  • Word count 400 words (+/- 10%).

 

Marking Criteria

Format:

The email should have appropriate entries for the following fields:

  1. To field – email address of the local lecturer and an appropriate greeting at the beginning of the message.
  2. Subject field (Unit Code: brief summary to indicate the topic of your email). See week 2 reading ‘How to email your lecturer’ for more details.COIT20249 is the Unit Code.
  3. An appropriate salutation including your name, and your email Signature (Full name, Student number, course of study, campus/workshop). Note that your course of study is the degree in which you are enrolled.

(1.5 marks)

 

Message: (This must be in the body of the email – do not send this as an attachment.).

  • Part A:5 marks for education, work experience and achievements/milestones(0.5 marks each).
  • Part B:
    • How you plan to use the COIT20249 skills/knowledge in your future career(75 marks).
    • Questions/suggestions you may have about this Unit(25 marks).

 

If the submission contains grammatical and/or typographical errors, or is NOT well structured, easy to understand, or outside the recommended length, there will be a penalty of – 0.5 marks.

There will be an additional – 0.5 mark penalty if an image fileonly is submitted without an MS-Word file of the email that can be edited using Track Changes, OR if an image of the email was not included in the Word document, OR if Parts A and B are sent as an attachment to the email rather thanbeing included in the actual message.

A further -0.5 marks will be deducted if the email is not sent to your lecturer OR not sent from your CQU student email account.

Week 4 - Participation Activity 2(4marks)

Requirements

Complete the on-line Quiz – click on PA2_Week-4 in Assessment box on the COIT20249 Moodle site.Questions relate to Information Literacy, Critical Thinking and the ALC embedded sessions from weeks 2–4 (inclusive).

 

Note you will have one (1) attempt only to complete this quiz. It will close at 5:00 PM AEST on the Thursdayof Week 5.

You are strongly urged to complete the quiz well before the due date and time.It is not possible to provide individual extensions for online quizzes for any reason including technical problems that are beyond your control.

There will NOT be any opportunities to complete the task after the due date and time because the answers will be released to those students who completed the Quiz.


 

Week 6 - Participation Activity 3 (8 marks)

 

IMPORTANT INFORMATION: This activity MUST be completed as an in-class assessment in Week 6 for internally enrolled students. The Unit Coordinator will contact Distance students to organise completion of the activity. Students are expected to arrive on time AND be present in class for the WHOLE workshop. Latecomers may be barred from entry if it is felt that they could disturb the other students who are completing the assessment. People who disturb other students may also be asked to leave.

 

This assessment activity must be completed and submitted during the class in week 6. Any students who cannot attend their workshop (in-class or online as scheduled by your local lecturer) will receive zero (0) marks. Please note that work or family commitments will not be an acceptable reason for being late or missing the class.

Requirements

By now you should have started organising your ideas and arguments for the Report (Assessment item 3). To ensure that you submit the best Report possible it is important that you seek constructive feedback from your local lecturer. PA3 requires you to demonstrate your understanding of the report case study requirements and the type of information you need to gather through the research process. This will be marked and returned to you in time for you to use the feedback to improve your Report.

 

You must not use any pre-prepared materials for this assessment as that will breach the requirements for an in-class assessment. Your local lecturer will provide further details. You will be provided a template to complete the assessment.

 

  1. In approximately 100-150 words, explain the organisation and the problem given in the report case study. In addition to the details provided in the case study (see Report Assessment Specification)you may need to make relevant assumptions about the organisation. Those assumptions must support the report tasks and must not contradict the details given in the case study.
  2. What is the main purpose for writing this report, and what are the key tasks to be explored in the report? Explain in approximately 100-150 words.
  3. In week 5, the ALC session will include finding academic references to be used in the report. Duringthat session you will be given two references.Youare expected to read and understand the contents of those references before coming to the Week 6 workshop. This part of the activity will require you to review those references using the Triple R framework. During the Week 6 class you will be provided a template to complete the assessment.
  4. Paraphrase a short paragraph relating to the technology covered in the Report requirements. Your lecturer will provide the reading required to be paraphrased. The paragraph should be structured according to the framework covered in ALC sessions.

 

PA3must relate to the case study described in the Report Assessment Specification (Assessment 3). That is, your submission needs to be specific to the case study provided in that assessment’s requirements.

Marking Criteria

  • Description of organisation and its problem identified in the case study (1 mark).
  • Appropriate statements about the aim/purpose of your report, and the key issues to be explored. Must relate to the case study (1 mark).
  • Review the two references as set out in point 3 of requirements above(4 marks).
  • Paraphrase a paragraph as set out in point 4 of requirements above (2 marks).

 

Note if the submission contains grammatical and/or typographical errors or is NOT well structured and easy to understand there will be a penalty of – 0.5 marks.

If the submission is a general description of a Report you will receive a maximum mark of 1.

Minimal feedback and a mark of zero (0)will be given if it is not focused on the case scenario given for the Report (Assessment 3) or does not follow the template provided for this assessment.Do not submit an advanced or acomplete draft of your Report

Week 10 - Participation Activity 4(4marks)

Requirements

Complete the on-line Quiz – click on PA4_Week-10 in Assessment box on the COIT20249 Moodle site. All questions relate to working as a team member, ethical aspectsof working in ICT and in a globalised world.

 

Note you will have one (1) attempt only to complete this quiz. It will close at 5:00 PM AEST on the Thursday of Week 11.
