Health Care Provider and Faith Diversity

Cultural and religious competence is in increasing demand in today’s healthcare and society. With the United States becoming a melting pot of cultures and religions, healthcare providers are expected to provide un-bias, competent care for their patients and the families of those patients. Christianity and Islamic religions have much in common, but also have many key components that are largely different. It is the healthcare worker’s responsibility to address these components to be able to provide the best care possible. The key to providing this competent care in regards to various religions and cultures to be able to compare and identify major components and differences, such as those identified in this paper. Worldview Questions

Christianity is a religion that believes in the Bible, both old and new testament as the final and only authority as a way to live one’s life. Christians also believe that Jesus Christ (who is part of the God-head) came down to earth and died for the human race, redeeming all those who choose Him (2 Cor. 5:14-15 NET). Redemption is through faith and faith only in the acceptance of Jesus Christ. Christians believe that the human nature fell to sin in the Garden of Eden, thus needing a savoir to redeem them (Eph. 1:7 NET, Rom. 3:24 NET). Christians also believe in a Day of Judgment, with those who have been found worthy through Jesus Christ receiving eternal life with Him in Heaven. Those who are found guilty ultimately dying a second and eternal death (Rev. 20:12 NET) Islam is closely tied to Christianity with a few key differences. The first difference is that Islam teaches humans nature is really good. Because of this there is not need for a Savior. Forgiveness of sin directly from God Almighty is good enough to get one to heaven. Islam does believe in prophets such as Noah, Moses and Elijah. However, Islam does not teach that Jesus was the Savior of the World; it is taught that Jesus was a great prophet. One of the biggest differences which is ultimately responsible for the above differences in beliefs, is that the Great Prophet Muhammad was given visions and words, resulting in the Quran. The Quran is where Islam gets its teachings and is the final authority for Islam. (Yaran, 2007)

What is Prime Reality?

Prime reality for Christians is the belief in God as the Creator of everything (Gen. 1:1-Gen. 2:2). He is in control of everything physical and non-physical. This core belief is found in the Beginning of the Bible starting in the first chapter, showing how God created the universe, the world and every living creature on earth. Much like Christianity, Islam believes in the God who created the universe, the earth and every living thing. Muslims do not believe in the Trinity as Christians do, however, as they believe that Jesus was a great prophet. Islam believes only in direct communication with God and that using another way to communicate with God is room for corruption and false Gods; this includes the “Son of Man” which is Jesus Christ who Christians believe came to earth to pay for humanities sins. Islam believes that God is powerful enough to forgive sin without the need of a savior. (Salafi Publications, 2015)

What is the nature of the World?

Again, back to the first Chapter of the Bible, Genesis 1:1 (NET), “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” Right from the beginning, the bible makes it very clear that the earth and the rest of the universe were created by God at His command. This theory puts God as ruler of the universe and all of His creations. Much like Christians, Muslims believed that God Almighty created the heavens, the earth and everything in it. Islam teaches that God is the Creator of the universe. Islam views God as a ruler over the universe, and a sovereign being who is all powerful. (Salafi Publications, 2015)

What is a human?

For the Christian, humans, or mankind, were made in God’s image (Gen. 1:26,27 NET). This idea gives mankind their moral status because God’s image is perfect according to the bible, making human life incredibly valuable. God also gives humanity the right to choose good or evil as seen in Genesis 3, allowing Adam and Eve to eat of the “Tree of Good and Evil”, and ultimately resulting in the downfall of man; this shows God true love for mankind allowing them to choose to love Him, or sin. Islam also teaches about humans having both physical and spiritual components. Unlike Christianity, however, Islam teaches that the human nature is not corrupt and therefore does not need a savior. Islam teaches that because human nature is pure, that God is able to forgive and offer eternal life without the death of Jesus Christ. People are free to choose to ask God’s forgiveness and therefore are granted freedom of choice. (Salafi Publications, 2015)

What happens when you die?

Christianity is a very broad religion with multiple views regarding what happens to a person after they die. Some say the person goes directly to heaven or hell, while others believe the individual is sleeping until the second coming of Jesus Christ. The common belief throughout Christianity however is that Jesus Christ died for the world, and those how have died in Christ will have eternal life with Him. (John 3:16,17 NET; 2nd Cor. 5:14 NET) The Quran and the prophet Muhammad teach that every person sits before God at the Day of Judgment. People are judged by their works on earth both good and bad, but only based of off what they are capable of. People cannot be judged for what they do not know. (World Assembly of Muslim Youth, 2002) “And he (i.e. man) presents for Us an example (i.e. attempting to establish the finality of death) and forgets his [own] creation. He says, Who will give life to bones while they are disintegrated?” Say, “He will give them life who produced them the first time; and He is, of all creation, Knowing.” [It is] He who made for you from the green tree, fire, and then from it you ignite. Is not He who created the heavens and the earth Able to create the likes of them? Yes, [it is so]; and He is the Knowing Creator.” (Quran, 36:78-81)

How is it possible to know anything?

The Bible is very clear through it’s entirety about humans having the ability to learn and make conscious choices. First, mankind was made it God’s image (Gen 1:26,27 NET); this implies the ability of knowledge and choice making all the way back in Genesis because God chose to make mankind showing choice and knowledge as part of God’s image. In addition, God also gave humans the choice to follow Him or the Devil. Real choice requires some knowledge, showing that humans were created with the ability to learn. Islam, again, is very close to Christianity regarding knowledge and decision making. Islam teaches that humans must make a choice to follow God, provide good works, and rebuke sin. This concept implies that humans have knowledge, especially when combined with the theory that Islam teaches of humans being created in God’s image. God as the creator made the conscious decision to create life, and the worlds; therefore, being created in God’s image, humans too have knowledge and learning capacities. (Salafi Publications, 2015)

How do we know what is right and wrong?

How can we know right from wrong according to the Christian Worldview? Explain. For Christians, knowing right and wrong all stems back to the Garden of Eden and the Tree of Knowledge in Genesis 3:1-7. After being deceived by the serpent and eating the fruit from the tree, both Adam and Eve were able to see good and evil; learning right and wrong. It is part of the innate human nature to know right from wrong, and is meant to be inline with the human moral status. Islam, like Christianity, relies on humans being created in the image of God as a moral compass for right and wrong. Islam is heavily weighted by performing “good deeds” and learning to please God. Love and compassion are large aspects in the religion and play a large role in the perceived way of reaching eternal life. In addition, the Quran is used as a guide to help assist its readers in determining right from wrong. (Yaran, 2007)

What is the meaning of human history?

Human history plays an important part in the Christian life. It gives lessons throughout the bible through real experiences of those that lived before and after Christ; both good and bad experiences are given. Human history also gives an account of Jesus Christ’s life, death and resurrection. Human history also gives proof of prophecies given long before proven events in the world’s history have happened giving support that prophecies in the future will happen, such as the prophecies in the Book of Daniel. In Islam human history plays a role in several ways. First, prophets and great people show a template of the way one should live. History also provides a guide for beliefs and, in fact, the Quran is a historical account from which Islam gets the majority of it’s guidance. If not for human history, this religion as well as many others would not exist. (Yaran, 2007)

Analysis

All faiths have strengths and areas of weakness. Some religions are extremely love and peace oriented while others are more aggressive. This next section with analyze the areas of strength and weakness for both Christianity and Islam, in an attempt to given a contrast between the two religions.

Christian faith

Christianity has many strengths. It provides a moral template for it’s followers to live by, it encourages love and compassion, and it provides a community for fellow believers to join and worship together. Christianity is also responsible for many non-profit organizations, such as ADRA (Adventist Development and Relief Agency), and help around the world. There can be cons to Christianity too. Christianity is a very large, broad term for people who have the core belief that Jesus Christ came and died for the world’s sins. However, there is much fighting over doctrines within Christianity causing much confusion and segregating within itself. All of this leads away from the Gospel which is at the heart of Christianity and drives people away from the church. Islam Islam, for the most part, is a very loving, compassionate religion. It is build around good deeds, showing love, and self-sacrifice. Unfortunately, when taken to the extreme, these attribute of a good religion can be taken to far. Self-sacrifice and good deeds can lead to what we know as radical Islam and terrorist groups. This can happen in any religion, however, Islam is best known for it’s extremist.

Spiritual Perspective on Healing

As discussed above, the current healthcare system is made up of very diverse patients regarding religion and culture. Many religions have certain “Do’s and Don’t” when it comes to medical treatment or certain medications. Knowing and understanding what the patient wants is key to providing the best possible healing environment as well as producing a positive professional relationship with that patient and their family.

Christianity

Christianity is a very broad term for many different beliefs. However, prayer for the most part is a very large part of patient care that is incorporated into the healing process. Pastors and anointing for the ill are also very common practices across the faith.

Islam

Islam is open to medical treatment for the most part. Prayer and fasting are also play a large role in sickness and times of need. It is important for the healthcare provider to pay close attention to special needs that may affect the patient’s treatment. For example, some Muslims fast during Ramadan, a month long fast where the partakers to not eat or drink from sunrise until sunset. Rituals like these are very important to some cultures, but can have serious effects on healthcare routines and treatment. (Pathy, et. Al, 2011)

Critical Components of Healing

According to the article by Laurie Eberst, “Arizona Medical Center Shows How to Be a ‘Healing Hospital,’ by incorporating three main components into healthcare. Those three components are a physical healing environment, high-end technology, and culturally loving care. It is essential that the patient’s religious beliefs be taken into account for when providing this culturally loving care. Otherwise, as the article states, all there is is a “Pretty Hospital.” (Eberst, 2008) Important Factors When dealing with individuals who are Christian, Islamic, or any other religion, it is key for the healthcare provider to provide the best care they can. This involves being competent in what the patient’s religion involves, and at the very least understanding it’s basic structure. Showing interest and asking questions regarding the patient’s religion is a great way to build a therapeutic relationship; ignoring their needs, both physical and spiritual is a great way to destroy that relationship.

What was Learned

Both Christianity and Islam have many things in common. Prayer, medication, and certain rituals play significant roles in both religions. Acknowledging and accepting the patient’s need for these and other religious aspects of care are paramount to a well-rounded, holist recovery. Nurses can provide competent care, hospitals can provide cutting-edge technology, but without allowing patients to access their emotional and spiritual tools, true healing cannot take place. It is the nurse’s role to advocate for the patient and their families to gain access to the religious and spiritual resources that are necessary for patient healing. When the nurse advocates for these, a healthy and therapeutic relationship is built between healthcare professional and patient. Instead of building up the patient’s level of care and outcomes, not realizing or acknowledging these needs can tear it down. (Called to Care, 2006)

Conclusion

As healthcare workers and providers, the final goal is for patients to reach their best outcome possible. It is the job of nurses and staff to provide holistic care including both physical and spiritual. Being competent in the cultures, religions, and beliefs of the patients cared for is not only the responsibility of healthcare workers, but it is their duty in providing the highest quality care possible. Christianity and Islam are both loving compassionate religions, whose goals and beliefs result in caring for those around them. Both can be taken to a high level of care and compassion, but on the opposite side can be taken to an extremist point where that love is turned into self reasoning and motivation. In the long-run, it is up to the nurse to see the person, regardless of religion as a person deserving of his or her best efforts in care
