Scenario:

Aldi is a global discount supermarket chain with more than 10,000 stores in 18 countries with an annual turnover of 76 Billion (AUD). You are a Business Analyst working at Aldi with a database background. For the purpose of this exercise assume that Aldi currently does not employ any GIS/LBS. You have been asked by the senior management to investigate the operational and strategic benefits of adopting LBS for the retail giant. You are to conduct research, suggest a list of solutions and provide adequate justification for your proposals.

Task 1 ­- Report Introduction

In this section you will lay the foundation for your proposal by explaining to the senior executives the GIS/LBS landscape:

• What are Geographical Information Systems (GIS)? How are GIS’ related to your area of expertise, databases?
• What are Location-Based Services (LBS)? Describe the link between LBS and GIS.

Task 2

After careful consideration of various services, you are to outline a list of LBS services and their benefits. First describe each LBS in detail. You must describe the technology together with its potential operational and strategic benefits to the organization. Use examples to illustrate your point. Then provide a critical review of the solution. You could decide the scope of the related topics for discussion (e.g. techniques, applications, implementation challenges, competitive advantage).

Remember, your task is not to push the management towards adopting a particular LBS solution, rather to provide an objective outline of the LBS landscape, potential benefits and pitfalls. Management should be in the best position to make an informed decision after reviewing your report.
