This assignment is designed to encourage the development of professional skills through the completion of weekly activities relevant to the role of an Information and Communication Technology (ICT) professional. Please refer to the course profile to see how this assessment item relates to the course learning outcomes.

 

These objectives will be measured by the ‘closeness of fit’ to meeting the requirements and the assessment criteria below.

 

General Assessment Criteria

 

Assessments provide the opportunity for students to demonstrate their knowledge and skills to achieve the required standard. To do this, assessment responses need to be both clear and easy to understand. If not, the University cannot determine that students have demonstrated their knowledge and skills. Assessments will, therefore, be marked accordingly including the potential for 0 (zero) marks where relevant.

 

Participation items 1 and 3 must focus on the topics given in the specifications for each item. Any assessment items outside the required topic may be awarded 0 (zero) marks.Participation Activity 1 (PA1) must be submitted as per the requirements.

 

Participation Activity3 (PA3) is focused on you writing a draft of your Report (Assessment 3). The intent of PA3 is to provideyou with constructive feedback to help you successfully complete the Report. Therefore PA3 must focus on the case study scenario given in the Report Assessment Specification(Assessment 3) or you may be awarded 0 (zero) marks and not receive any feedback.If you use Track Changes when writing your PA3 you must ensure that the submitted document is the finaland correctversion of the document. That is, if your submitted report contains Track Changes or Comments or any other editing marks it may be awarded 0 (zero) marks. It is your responsibility to submit the final and correct version of your report.

 

Participation Activities 2 and 4 are on-line Quizzes and you will get one (1) chance only to complete them and they must be completed before the due date and time.

 

 

Academic Integrity

 

There are 4 participation activities (PA) they are scheduled to be completed in weeks 2, 4, 6 and 10.They are due at 5 PM AEST on the Mondays after those weeks. For example PA1 is due on the Monday of Week 3.The weekly participation activities and corresponding marking criteria are listed on the following pages. You need to ensure that ALLyour weekly participation activities are free of any spelling, grammatical and typographical errorsbefore submission.

 

All assignments will be checked for plagiarism (material copied from other students and/or material copied from other sources) using TurnItIn. If you are found to have plagiarised material or if you have used someone else’s words without appropriate referencing, you will be penalised for plagiarism which could result in zero marks for the whole assignment. In some circumstances a more severe penalty may be imposed. Submission Requirements

 

PA1 and PA3 are to be uploaded in to Moodle. The submission links can be accessed throughthe Assessment block on the Moodle course website. PA2 and PA4 are online quizzes that need to be completed in Moodle.The submission/quiz links can be accessed through the Assessment block on the Moodle course website.

 

For PA1 and PA3the uploaded documents must be fully submitted for grading purposes. Moodle implements an auto submission process for those items uploaded and left as drafts before the original deadline. However, any assessments uploaded after the original deadline must be manually submitted by the students.

 

Please note that auto-submission process does not work for late submissions (including assessments which have extensions). Auto-submission only works where the original deadline of an assessment has not changed. If you are submitting after the deadline (original or extended), you must complete the Moodle submission process. Further details on completing the submission process are available via the ‘Moodle Help for Students’ link in the Support block of your Moodle pages.

 

Assessments left as drafts on Moodle after the deadlines accrue late penalties. Late submissions will attract penalties at 5% per day of the total available mark for the individual assessment item.

 

Files that are auto-submitted will not be reverted to draft status except in extenuating circumstances. It is your responsibility notto leave draft assessmentsin Moodle at the time of the original deadline if the files are not ready to be submitted for marking.

 

Weekly Participation Activities

 

Week 2 - Participation Activity 1(4 marks)

 

Requirements

 

Using the guidelines in ‘How to email your lecturer’ which is in the Week 2 Tutorial on the Moodle website, write and send an email to your local lecturer. The body of the email should have two parts: a Personal Biography; and your thoughts about this course. The email should be written in first person as you are writing about yourself. The message should include conventional elements such as a greeting at the beginning, a salutation at the end and a signature containing your full name, student number and program of study. Note that a copy of the email MUST be uploaded into Moodle for marking purposes.

 

Part A - Personal Biography

 

You need to include in the email awell-structured“Personal Biography” (approximately 250 words). The biography should contain an overview of your education, work experience and achievements.

 

You may have gone straight from school to undergraduate study then onto postgraduate study at university and have no work experience.  If that is your situation then you should explain why you have no work experience and describe your plans for work in future. Similarly, this applies for achievementsalso.

 

Part B - Professional Skills in Information Communication Technology

 

The email should also describe what you would like to achieve by studying this course and any questions or suggestions you may have about this course. This section should be about 150 words.

 

Submission

 

Upload a copy of the sent email to Moodle (in the form of a MS-Word document) to be marked. Add all the email header details, the content of the message and also a screenshot of your sent message to a MS-Word file and submit. Do not submit an image file only. Students will be penalised if there is no MS-Word file to mark and provide feedback through Track Changes.When sending the email,include Parts A and B in the email itselfnot as a separate attachment.

 

If you use Outlook you can open the message and click “save as” and save the message as a text file that you can upload into Moodle– however the formatting will be lost so you will need to ensure that you edit it to make it easy to read and understand. Or you could copy and paste the To:, subject line and content of the message in a MS-Word file and also add a screen shot of your email to that file and upload into Moodle.

 

NOTES:

 

  • Recommend use of headings and paragraphs to clearly identify separate elements
  • A copy of the email has to be uploaded into Moodle to be marked.
  • Word count400 words (+/- 10%).

 

Marking Criteria

 

Format:

 

The email should have appropriate entries for the following fields:

 

  1. To field – sent to local lecturer, and have an appropriate greeting at the beginning of the message.
  2. Subject field (meaningful subject line as per week 2 ‘How to email your lecturer’)
  3. Email Signature (Full name, Student number, program of study, campus) should be preceded by an appropriate salutation.

 

(1.5 marks)

 

Message: (note – do not submit this as an attachment. This must be in the email).

 

  • Part A:5 marks for education, work experience and past achievements (0.5 each).
  • Part B:
    • Description of what you would like to achieve by studying this course (marks).
    • Questions you may have about this course (5 marks).

 

If the submission contains grammatical and/or typographical errors, or is NOT well structured, easy to understand, or outside the recommended length, there will be a penalty of – 0.5 marks. There will be an additional – 0.5 mark penalty if only an image file is submitted without an MS-Word file of the email that can be edited using Track Changes, OR if an image of the email was not included in the Word document, OR if Parts A and B are sent as an attachment with the email rather thanbeing included in the actual message.

 

Week 4 - Participation Activity 2(4marks)

 

Requirements

 

Complete the on-line Quiz – click on PA2_Week-4 in Assessment box on the COIT20249 Moodle site. All questions relate to Information Literacy Skills.

 

Note you will have one (1) attempt only to complete this quiz. It will close at 5:00 PM AEST on the Monday of Week 5.

 

You are strongly urged to do it well before the due date and time. The quiz CANNOT be re-opened for any reason.

 

There will NOT be any opportunities to complete the task after the due date and time because the answers will be released to those students who completed the Quiz.


 

Week 6 - Participation Activity 3(8marks)

 

Requirements

 

By now you should have started organising your ideas and arguments for the Report (Assessment item 3). To ensure that you submit the best Report possible it is important that you seek constructive feedback from your local lecturer. This PA requires you tosubmit an early draft of your Report – 1000 words. This will be marked and returned to you in time for you to use the feedback to improve your Report.The draft should include:

 

  • Title page of the PA3 assessment
  • Report Title page –This should be as per the Requirements in the Report (Assessment 3) specification.
  • Three to five sentences describing the organisationwhich is the case study in the Report. Read the Report (Assessment 3) specification to see the details of the case study. Note that you will have to make some assumptions about the organisation.
  • Three to five sentences stating the aim/purpose of your Report. Should discuss the overall purpose and all key task requirements in the report specifications.
  • Outline the sections/headingsand the content that you will include in the body of the Report.This outline should be a brief analysis (around 350 words) based on 3 to 4 academic references that you have sourced for the report. The focus of the analysis could be the key issues (three tasks) in the report specification. This section needs to have headings and subheadings (numbered) and the references need to be properly cited and referenced.
  • Three to fivesentences about your findings/conclusions.This must relate to the main points covered in your outline.
  • A summary of at least three of your recommendations.Should be formatted as per the textbook.
  • Reference list

 

This draft Report MUST RELATE to the case study described in Assessment 3 - Report. That is, your submission needs to be specific to the case study.DO NOT just provide generic details about what to include in a report.

 

It is anticipated that PA3 would be about 1000 words.

 

Marking Criteria

 

Draft Report:

 

  • Report Title page –as per the Requirements of the Title page of the Report (0.5 marks).
  • Description of organisation in the case study (1 mark).
  • Appropriate statementsabout the aim/purpose of your report. Must relate to the case study (1 mark).
  • Appropriate sections/headings for the body of the report and relevant comments about the content of each section. They must relate to the three tasks listed in the case study scenario of the Report specification (3 marks).
  • Appropriate statements about your findings/conclusions(1 mark).
  • Clear summary of recommendations (1 mark).
  • Citations and reference list should be APA referencing style (0.5 marks).

 

Note if the submission contains grammatical and/or typographical errors or is NOT well structured and easy to understand there will be a penalty of – 0.5 marks.

If the draft is outside the word limit (1000 +/- 100 words) there will be a penalty of 1 mark.

 

If the submission is a general description of a Report you will receive a maximum mark of 1. The content must be an early draft of the Report which you will submit for Assessment

 

Week 10 - Participation Activity 4(4marks)

 

Requirements

 

Complete the on-line Quiz – click on PA4_Week-10 in Assessment box on the COIT20249 Moodle site. All questions relate to working in a globalised world.

 

Note you will have one (1) attempt only to complete this quiz. It will close at 5:00 PM AEST on the Monday of Week 11.

 

You are strongly urged to do it well before the due date and time. The quiz CANNOT be re-opened for any reason.
