A Qualitative Phenomenological Study of Female Ministers in Southern Baptist Churches in Texas
The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to understand the experiences of female ministers in Southern Baptist affiliated churches in Texas. Research questions of the study included: What stories do the participants have to tell about their experiences with God‘s calling and leadership in ministry? What sustains the participants in their daily work in ministry? What responses do Southern Baptist women receive from others related to their calling to and leadership in ministry? Ultimately, why do the women in the study choose to serve in SBC churches? Purposeful, criterion sampling provided 19 female staff members at local churches. Participants had an average age range of 30-39 years old, experienced a call to ministry around 22 years old on average, and had been in their positions an average of 5-9 years. Of the sample, five women experienced ordination and four women held a ministry license. Data collection involved face-to-face interviews, phone interviews and an optional one-day retreat for the group of participants. Data analysis provided relevant themes and patterns in the interviews. Findings indicated tremendous support for participants‘ calling and leadership in ministry, as long as they did not pursue ministry in specific ministry areas. They chose to stay in their locations as a result of the love for their congregations, and their calling to a specific type of ministry. Despite the high demands women experienced and subtle opposition to their place in ministry, most participants accepted the limits of their roles in their congregations.
