Traveling in Japan, I visited the school of a young friend, Yukiko (age 8) and got a small taste of her world. Japanese schools are very disciplined and the students are taught to be self-sufficient. I was actually quite impressed by their system and wondered if it would ever be possible to instill some of these qualities in the American educations system.
