Global Information Systems in Agriculture

Ever since the beginning of the world, human being have often relied on nature by observing different aspects to determine the most appropriate times when they would cultivate. Unfortunately, in relying in these observations, sometimes they would not make the right decision on other aspects such as the right place to farm and the most conducive plants, which may be planted at a certain time. In the last three decades, the modern world has transformed all this through the development of the global information systems that focus on different aspects from weather anticipation to determining the whether the land would allow for cultivation of different plants. Farmers are now able to have their own individual statistics, which determine when and where to best cultivate.

According to Davenport (2013), GIS systems role in the current world functions well due to their capacity to be applied in the different instances. A study by Aronoff (1989) called this the managerial perspective since the systems can be applied simultaneously to allow the farmers to anticipate the times when it would best be appropriate to plant and optimize on the output. At the time of Aronoff study, there had not been the advancement in other aspects of communication such as the internet to facilitate research. Today, GIS relies on different aspects all of which can be linked to provide information in three major aspects. These are hydrography or the water and irrigation needs, analysis on the weather patterns and the soil type to determine whether the plants would thrive and if so, they determine the ideal needs to accommodate for optimization of output. Researches by Goodchild et al. (2012) have shown that the future of the GIS will focus on the products that farmers should consider to cultivate by evaluating other
