Methods Research Question: Why are African Americans brutalized more often by the police than Whites? Hypothesis and Rationale: Police officers are more likely to take violent action against people with a lower social status than people with a higher social status. I think there will be a positive relationship between occurrences of violence (X) and people with a lower social status (Y). Social dominance theory focuses on both individual and structural factors that contribute to various forms of group-based oppression. Method Used to Obtain Information/Data: Research conducted by the National Institute of Justice will be used to gather occurrences of violence between blacks and police officers as well as whites and police officers, “data were not originally collected to address the topic of police evaluations, the cities selected are quite appropriate for a study of race and police” (Howell 51). Two of the four cities, New Orleans and Detroit are majority Black cities. The other two cities, Charlotte and Chicago are not. In each city an equal number of White and Black people were interviewed, the focus of the data was between Black and White people so the study avoided western and southern cities. Data was also collected from African American and non African American Voters from four major cities. Citizens Views on Police Conduct In the findings it was found that White respondents generally had more positive views of the police than Black respondents. The findings also found that living in a predominately Black neighborhood generally leads to lower expectations of the police. In addition, these predominately black neighborhoods had lower incomes than the White neighborhoods. The article concludes that Blacks have more negative views towards police than Whites do as a whole. “Previous research clearly indicates that, due to a history of differential treatment, African Americans are more negative than whites toward the police, controlling for many other explanatory factors” (Howell 62). Prediction People with a lower social status are more likely to be brutalized by the police than people with higher social status. According to the findings people with lower social status have more negative views of the police than people with a higher social status because they have been treated more harshly. Population The data that was collected was collected from African American and non African American Voters from four major cities. “The data for this research are from surveys of African-American and non- black (hereafter called ‘white` for simplicity)` registered voters in four large cities: Chicago, New Orleans, Detroit, and Charlotte, NC. While these data were not originally collected to address the topic of police evaluations, the cities selected are quite appropriate for a study of race and police” (Howell 51).
