 Assignment Topic

In this assignment students are required to critically debate the key messages for practice within contemporary child protection literature and policy. Within their discussions they should:

1. critically examine theoretical concepts and definitions underpinning child protection
2. critically examine the changing social and practice context for safeguarding children and young people in Scotland
3. critically analyse the development of Scotland’s Child Protection Policy and critically evaluate its impact on contemporary practice initiatives
4. reflect on their own ethical and professional value base and the implications for practice in the context of enhancing inter-professional working.

 The assignment is not just about ‘policy and law’, you have to consider the overall context for children’s welfare in Scotland including inequality and the family. By addressing the Assignment Topic your assignment should address the four Learning Outcomes, with an appropriate emphasis in light of the weighting distribution of the marks:

LO1. Critically examine the context of child abuse and child protection within contemporary society. (50 marks)

LO2. Demonstrate a critical understanding of the law and legal processes in respect of child protection. (10 marks)

LO3. Critically analyse the development of national policy in respect of child protection. (20 marks)

LO4. Critically examine the scope of child protection within the legislative and policy frameworks from an inter-professional perspective. (20 marks)

The assignment should be written in the ‘Third Person’ (Ref exception below)

Assignment Topics:

1. critically examine theoretical concepts and definitions underpinning child protection
2. critically examine the changing social and practice context for safeguarding children and young people in Scotland

This should involve consideration of literature, research etc relating to the prevalence of child maltreatment, the contemporary ‘family’, and the impact of poverty and inequalities in terms of child maltreatment. Also theoretical models of understanding child abuse and protection in the family context should be considered.

Assignment Topic 3:

3. critically analyse the development of Scotland’s Child Protection Policy over the past twenty five years and critically evaluate its impact on contemporary practice initiatives

Make sure you briefly evidence of your understanding of broad legal principles and the international conventions which underpin them. This will then set the context for the exploration of Scottish policy. (Your in-depth knowledge and understanding of the legislation has already been assessed in the CP Law Assignment)

Make sure you then focus on key Scottish Policies. If you make reference to legislation or policies such as ‘Every Child Matters’ in England and Wales make sure it is in the context of making comparisons / highlighting differences with policies such as Getting It Right For Every Child. It is not enough just to describe the policy. You should also offer critical analysis of the policy and how it is developing from 2016 and beyond, with reference to appropriate literature.

Assignment Topic 4:

            reflect on their own ethical and professional value base and the implications for practice in the context of enhancing inter-professional working.

This links with Assignment Topic 3. For example you may want to consider future implications for practice in terms of the implementation of the Children and Young Peoples (Scotland) Act 2014. The focus should be on reflecting on your own value base beyond what your professional code of conduct indicates (e.g. NMC / SSSC etc) and critically analysing inter-professional working and its effective implementation. 

It would also be appropriate to illustrate this with one, or two at the most, BRIEF examples from your practice setting. (This is where you could change to using the ‘First Person’ i.e. ‘An example from my own current practice setting illustrates effective / challenging / difficulty / an orientation etc…..’) But supported by reference to literature.

• Do not consider child development / attachment etc – that is for Module 2 ‘Protecting Children’

• Do not focus on major issues such as problem substance use / domestic abuse / child trafficking / neglect / child sexual abuse etc – that is also for Module 2 ‘Protecting Children’

• Do not get caught up in detailed examination of assessment and intervention issues such as the GIRFEC assessment model / My World Triangle / National Risk Framework / the obstacles to effective assessment etc – that is for Module 3 ‘Child Protection Practice’
