INSTRUCTIONS:
Causes Of Depression Research Analysis Overview Apply your critical thinking skills to find and analyze two scholarly research articles on a specific topic in psychology; the causes of depression. Your assessment is a worksheet designed to guide you in the steps of the analysis of the articles. Note: Assessments in this course will help you progressively build your critical thinking, analysis, and writing skills. Completing the assessments in sequential order, 1–5, will give you the best opportunity for success in demonstrating each of these skills. Context The writing you are required to do in your lifetime varies greatly. Personal writing may include letters and e-mails, while professional writing may include e-mails, business letters, proposals, and reports. Communicating effectively and professionally is an important skill that can help you in all aspects of your life. You will find that the ability to effectively present yourself and your ideas in writing can also help you build your skill in critically analyzing the writings, ideas, and supporting evidence presented by others. Read the Assessment 2 Context document for more information on writing skills, as well as the causes of depression. ASSESSMENT 2 CONTEXT Presenting your own thoughts is a valuable skill, but the ability to analyze the ideas of others is equally important to emphasize your arguments or support your position. One of the ways to do this is through paraphrasing. Paraphrasing is creating your own version of the key information and ideas that belong to someone else. It is also a legitimate way to borrow from a source, as long as you accurately cite the source! The mental skills needed to successfully paraphrase can allow you to gain a deeper understanding of the original material and connect that back to your own arguments. Often, professional writing requires more than simply being able to express thoughts or opinions; it also requires the ability to support those thoughts or opinions with valid, credible, evidence-based research. The basic research typically done in undergraduate programs involves searching for information, finding scholarly or professional resources about the information, and using critical thinking to analyze and interpret the information. In today`s technology-driven society, there is a tendency to over-rely on the Internet as the primary research resource. Psychology professionals understand that a wealth of information and past research can only be found in a library. Learning how to search library databases for journal articles relevant to your needs is a skill that will serve you well throughout your career. Online libraries usually offer tutorials on how to search effectively, and librarians are always happy to help. Causes of Depression Depression stems from many potential biological, personality, and environmental factors. Generally, causes fall into one of two major categories: biological or cognitive behavioral. Those on one side of the debate argue that biological factors are the root cause of depression. Those on the other side of the debate argue for the perspective that depression is caused by cognitive-behavioral and environmental factors. The biological perspective focuses on factors, such as heredity, genes, hormones, neurology, and so on. The cognitive-behavioral position, which also includes environmental factors, focuses on factors such as thoughts, behaviors, trauma, social support, socialization, and so on. There are several lines of evidence to support the biological perspective: Genetic studies. Twin studies. Biochemical studies (such as homones, serotonin levels, et cetera.) There are several lines of evidence to support the cognitive-behavioral perspective: Rumination (which is repetitive negative thinking) and self-concept. Social support Culture (could include traumatic experiences, socioeconomic conditions, socialization, or other personal or environmental factors). To deepen your understanding, you are encouraged to consider the questions below and discuss them with a fellow learner, a work associate, an interested friend, or a member of the business community. What are some professional situations in which it would be beneficial to utilize library and Internet research skills? What is your professional impression of a person who sends a professional communication like an e-mail that contains misspelled words or other grammatical errors?
