FM4.05 Managing Health & Safety Assignment Guidelines
Task 1 You need to produce information on Health and Safety for an insertion into an Induction Booklet to be given to all new starters within your company. I have detailed below what you need to include in this section. Firstly, think about the language you will use. Health & Safety is traditionally seen as boring, so can you make it something your staff will want to read whilst at the same time covering the vital information? I would structure it into sections as follows:
Section 1 – Health & Safety Legislation (1.1) You need to give an overview of all the relevant H & S legislation that might apply to your organisation. Although the AC asks you to ‘identify’ which essentially means just a list, I would try and write a few sentences about each piece of legislation or Regulations that you identify. Think about the following as a very minimum but if you can come up with more then do so: HSAWA Management of HSAWA Display Screen Equipment Regs
Manual Handling Regs
Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regs
PUWER
COSHH
RIDDOR
Fire safety (500 words maximum)
Section 2 –
The Importance of Health and Safety and the H & S Policy (1.2; 1.3; 1.4; 2.1; 2.3; 2.4; 3.1; 3.2)
1.2 You need to explain why H & S is important. Think about it from both the individual’s point of view and also the organisation, so obviously accidents etc for the individual but loss of business, clients, standing, prosecution, down-time, productivity etc etc for the organisation. You could consider that the various relationships will be enhanced where H & S is seen as important and a pro-active approach is adopted. Also safer working environments
1.3 In this section you can also explain the minimum legal requirements for the management of H & S. This is essentially an explanation of what the HSAWA and the MHSAWA states must be done by an organisation. Think about the requirements underthe H & SAWA – inductions, risk assessments and consultation.
