Welcome to the module EU Economy: Issues and Policies [MOD004662]. The module will introduce students to the history, the institutional and legal organisation, and the current political issues of the European Union. With currently 28 member states and over 500 million citizens, the European Union is the second largest economic area in the world, but since the financial crisis of 2007/08 Europe has experienced a prolonged economic and political crisis. The rise of anti-establishment, anti-European parties, high unemployment rates and negative growth rates in southern Europe, the Syrian refugee crisis, and the recent decision of the UK to exit the bloc have put enormous pressure on the European Project.

The emphasis of the module throughout is on the legal and economic underpinnings of the EU. Students will learn and discuss policies across industry and service sectors, labour markets, social, regional, environmental and trade areas, amongst others. Whilst economic analysis is emphasised throughout, a multi-disciplinary approach is adopted wherever appropriate to any particular policy area. Analysis is supported by up-to-date case materials and events using a wide range of printed media and on-line sources. Students will engage in group work where you will have the chance to critically discuss current issues in more depth. The module also provides students with the opportunity to look further into research and debates about the European Union.
