You will choose one specific Special Educational Need and discuss its key challenges and critical issues linked to it.

Structure for the Essay

Your essay must use the following 3 sections 1. Introduction – may include Why have you chosen this SEN? Background facts/figures/information and key features of the SEN. What you plan to discuss.

2. Critical Issues –  choose one or two critical issues  - these could include Strategies used by teachers/other practitioners /  Issues around inclusion (e.g. classroom support vs withdrawal; mainstream or special school; use of TAs etc). Resourcing and perfomativitiy issues (here you would be focusing on the pressure/issues facing school leaders). Evaluation of specific resources (e.g. for ASD – comparing and contrasting PECS and ABA toolkit)

 NOTE 1: choosing one issue may be a better option than choosing two as you will be able to go into more critical depth

 NOTE 2: Your critical issue(s) must relate to your chosen SEN – a critical issue for one SEN may not be a critical issues for a different SEN

3. Conclusions What are your main findings? What are your recommendations for policy and/or practice?

Aims

 Specific SENs could include: ASD, ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia, cerebral palsy, visual impairment, language delay, deafness, BESD, mutism, stuttering/stammering, depression, Down’s syndrome, etc. This list is not exhaustive. There are hundreds of different, identifiable, SENs, so if you wish to study an SEN that is not listed here, feel free to do so. Your essay should:

 Demonstrate a knowledge of the specific SEN

  Identify the main challenges faced by students, practitioners, and the schools

  Identify and critically discuss/assess issues, strategies and resources that impact on the meeting of these needs

  Conclude with recommendations for policy and/or practice
