AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES Aims of Module • To introduce key concepts and critical tools for the understanding and analysis of dramatic, mediated or live performance texts • To introduce approaches to the textual analysis of the mediated arts, theatre, performance and dance. • To enable students to develop, research and apply analytic approaches and critical thinking skills

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module the students will be able to:

  • Discuss approaches to the close textual analysis.
  • Undertake independent analysis based on the critcal approaches introduced.
  • Demonstrate understanding of the theoretical and practical approaches of key media and performance practitioners
  • Develop their ability to write analytically and critically about mediated and live arts practice 
  • Utilise secondary source analysis and criticism in analysing theatre/performance practice

ASSESSMENT: (Semester 2)

Essay (Semester 2) (2,500 word count) (50% of final mark)

Essay Questions

1- How useful is semiotic analysis as an approach to understanding media representations? Discuss using two examples.

2- Discuss the arguments for and against specialist ‘minority’ programming targeted at specific ethnic minority audiences on British television.

3- In spite of recent developments, the reality of a lived multiculturalism is not represented on British television and the media in general can by no means seen as ethnically neutral. Discuss.

4- In what ways has the feminist movement worked towards uncovering limited and stereotypical representations of women in the mainstream media? Consider at least TWO feminist perspectives in your answer.

5- To what extent has the stability of class as a marker of identity changed in contemporary Britain? Discuss with reference to two examples from British television.
