Counter Attack Actions Taken by the Organization

The organization in the mini-case study did set a visionary Technical Underwriting Financial System (TUFS), with clear goals of streamlining the underwriting process and providing strategic e-business capabilities to the organization. Nevertheless, I do not think the team put in place adequate long-term and short-term counter attack actions since the project proved to be a flop just a couple of months after it was established. The underwriting system has constantly continued to give underwriting errors while at the same time employees in the organization have been more resistant towards the utilization of the system. The short-term measures did not aid in any way because TUFS was suppose to pay back its initial investment over the first two years of operations from savings emanating from underwriting. Instead, the system failures brought about extra costs to the organization; thus, neither the immediate nor the long-term countermeasures were of help to the organization. In addition, the creation and development of the system lacked cooperation between the technicians and underwriters to help develop a system that would suit the needs of the underwriters in the organization.

Measures ignored from the beginning

Establishing insurance TUFS have to consider the different stakeholders by recognizing the importance of process and system compliance. This means that the corporate culture needs to be established from the word go. This will ensure the interests of the policy makers in the organization are not sacrificed when the organization’s underwriters work on the insurance contract. The organization also need to consider that whenever a problem arises in such a system, through a checklist manual acting as a point of reference, the problem should be identified and the main cause sorted out (Yeh and Chang, 2007).

Both the insurance company and the system vendor should enact a series of measure to prevent the reoccurrence of the errors witnessed during underwriting. However, since this did not work for the organization in the short and long-term, the organization should take an extra step to checking for system upgrades. Changes to be made should be followed by reviews and tests to ensure the errors are eradicated, and most importantly, the organization’s staff should be made part of these changes by being offered necessary training to aid in an effective system operation (Laudon and Laudon, 2004).

The firm in the mini-case study lacked planning; this is evident in the fact that a need to train their staff only comes up with difficulties in using the new system (McKeen, 2012). According to Noe (2002), change can be frustrating; especially considering employees can grow comfortable with an old system even at times when it does not perform as intended. As such, if employee training is ignored as seen in the mini-case, then they are most likely to be reluctant in embracing and learning new concepts. The organization should not look at training as an additional cost since it is an important part of its growth and success. In addition, employees that are trained are more efficient and register higher levels of productivity. Management in the different types of organizations should be concerned with training their employees at all times by setting up platforms that set clear guidelines on how this can be done

Conclusion

Long-term and short-term counter-attack measures put in place by any organization should be adequate to cover the organization against any losses and further allowing the organization to cope with the existing market trends. Organizations should also be concerned with setting in place, reliable counter attack measure where they should train their staff to ensure willingness in embracing new systems that would be beneficial to both the organization and the staff.
