Development proposal – Power station

An oil fired power station is planned for construction near to a major estuary from which it will abstract cooling water at a rate of 150m3 / hour.  The water will be heated to 45^oC as part of the power station operation but then is passed through holding lagoons and an effluent treatment plant prior to discharge back to the estuary.  The estuary contains an important fishing port and an extensive area of SSSI designated on account of the resident and migratory populations of waders and water fowl.

Fuel for the power station will be supplied via a new pipeline from a nearby oil refinery, which will be constructed as part of the development.   Oil storage capacity on the power station site is provided by two 50,000 litre tanks which are supplied by the pipeline. The construction phase of the project is expected to last 18 months and involve up to a maximum of 600 personnel.  During the operational phase, a workforce of 150 will work a continuous shift pattern.
