Understanding Organisations – Module Overview 

This module gives an introduction to organisations, their structure and culture and the behaviour of individuals and groups within them. Topics covered include: the nature organisations; organisational structure and culture; organisational politics and power; individual behaviour; communication.

Aims and Objectives

To enable students to understand the structure of organisations and how they influence not only the performance of the workforce but also the culture and resulting quality of output and effectiveness.

This will involve developing an awareness and understanding of:

the key features of effective organisations; the nature and purpose of organisations;

the relationship between organisational structure, culture, and performance; how to map an organisation’s structure and culture;

the role and importance of power, politics, conflict, within organisations.

Learning Outcomes 

By the end of this module students should have developed:

an understanding of the nature and types of organisations;

an understanding of organisational structure and its importance to organisational effectiveness;

an awareness of how to construct an informal and formal organisational chart for an organisation;

an understanding of what is meant by organisational culture and an ability to reflect on culture that exists within an organisation;

developed an understanding of the importance of the relationship between informal and formal processes within organisations and their impact on organisational effectiveness;

an understanding of different kinds of organisational power, interest groups and influencing strategies within organisations;

a basic understanding of theories of motivation and how they may be successfully applied in the workplace;
