MCLT202: BRIEF AND GUIDANCE FOR REVIEW ESSAYS

The brief: This task asks you to select an academic reference (a book chapter, a journal article or a monograph) that is relevant to the topic of the research project you did a presentation on. You will write a 1000-word-long critical review of the chosen reference by

(a) examining the methodology applied and

(b) proposing an alternative methodological framework to engage with the same object of research. In your review essay, you need to

1. Identify and explain very briefly the aims and objectives of the chosen reference.

2. Discuss critically the chosen piece’s methodology. You need to explain

i) what the research method or method(s) are

; ii) how these methods are being applied and justified to investigate the aims stated; and

iii) in what way, if any, this piece contributed to your project proposal (which you did a presentation on).

3. Explain the potential advantages, problems and weaknesses of the methodology proposed by your chosen piece.

4. Propose an alternative methodological framework that would respond to the same research question and object. Mention briefly potential strength and weaknesses of your proposed alternative. What else do I need to know about the essay?

1. Your chosen reference should be relevant to the topic of your presentation. The degree of relevance can be negotiated with your seminar tutor.

2. You MUST select an academic source to review. The newspaper articles, newspaper reviews, blog entries, online commentaries, etc. are NOT academic pieces.
