Essay structure:

Introduction

• Introduce your chosen topic.
• Provide a brief synopsis of why this topic is worth exploring.
• Define the key terms and theories that you will refer to and then outline the sections of your essay - this is what you will be covering (300- 500 words).

Main body

This is where you develop your argument through a series well constructed sub-sections, though usually no more than three. Ensure that you retain the central focus that is related the your chosen topic. I recommend that you use subheadings and signposting to guide your reader through the constructed narrative (1000-1400 words).

You will likely include the following:

• Define ‘mainstream’ media and say whether this is still a relevant term to use. Why? Why not?
• Identify the media text you will focus on, provide details of its ownership and ideology
• Identify the intended audience of the text and your evidence
• Explain the relationship between identity and the media – generally and in relation to your chosen text
• Identify the aspect of identity that is addressed/you wish to focus on and say how this is represented
• Media Effects Theory – due to a limited word count you should choose the most relevant to your essay as you cannot cover all of these.

Conclusion

• As with any conclusion you need to bring together all the ideas that you have covered in relation to the chosen topic (circa 300-500 words).

• This means recapping on what you have covered.

• Your reader should end with a clear understanding of your view on the mainstream media’s role and influence on the construction of identity.
