Cellular Transport

INSTRUCTIONS:

This is a "hands-on, wet" experiment performed in your kitchen. Go to the Cell Transport Materials web page for a list of materials needed for this experiment. Place all recordings onto the Cell Transport Worksheet. EXPERIMENT 1 - DIFFUSION In a drinking glass, place about 1 inch of tap water. To the water add about 1/4 teaspoon of Instant Coffee. DO NOT STIR OR SHAKE THE WATER. Set the glass aside and observe what happens. Record the time it takes for the instant coffee to completely dissolve. Do the same as above but this time use bottled or filtered water and record the time it takes to dissolve. Repeat the experiment using sugar instead of instant coffee. Record the time it takes to dissolve. Repeat the experiment using salt instead of instant coffee. Record the time it takes to dissolve. EXPERIMENT 2 - DIFFUSION Either open a bottle of perfume, light a scented candle, or spray a room deodorizer in a room that you normally do not stay in or visit often. Go to another room farthest away from the scent. Record how long it takes for you to smell the scent. EXPERIMENT 3 - OSMOSIS Select two bowls into which your hands or fingers will easily fit. In one of the bowls, fill with warm tap water. In the other bowl, place warm tap water and about two tablespoons of salt and mix thoroughly. Place one hand (or a few fingers) into the bowl with warm tap water. Place your other hand (or a few fingers) into the bowl with the warm salt water. Make sure the salt has dissolved first. Keep your hands (or fingers) in both bowls until you observe wrinkling of the skin. Record the time it takes for the hand (or fingers) in just the warm water to begin wrinkling. Record the time it takes for the hand (fingers) in the warm Salt water to begin wrinkling. EXPERIMENT 4 - OSMOSIS Obtain two leaves of lettuce. Place one leaf of lettuce on a paper towel on the counter and the other leaf in a bowl of tap water. Do not refrigerate. After 30 minutes, observe both leaves of lettuce and record their appearance. Take the leaf that was left on the counter and place it into the bowl of water. After 30 minutes, observe and record the appearance of the leaf. EXPERIMENT 5 - OSMOSIS Obtain a clear drinking glass tall enough to hold a stalk of celery without tipping. Fill the glass 1/8 full with distilled or filtered water. Add several drops (at least 6 - 8) of food coloring to the water (do not use yellow; prefer blue or red). Place a stalk of celery into the colored water. Set aside and observe every two minutes until the food coloring has reached the top of the celery. Record your observations. FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT DIFFUSION AND OSMOSIS, VISIT THESE SITES:

Cellular Transport[Student`s name][Professor`s name][Institutions][Unit name][Date]DiffusionEXPERIMENT 1 DIFFUSIONIntroductionDiffusion is the process by which molecules intermingle as a result of their kinetic energy of random motion from a point of higher concentration to a place of lower concentration due to diffusion gradient. The average diffusion rate is expected to depend on average velocity which gives relative diffusion rate.Materials used were; 4drinking glasses, tap water, bottled water, tea spoon, instant coffee pack, sugar and salt pack (in small quantities of solutes)ProcedureThe drinking glass was filled 1 inch with water tap and then ¼ teaspoon of instant coffee added and the solution was not shaken or stirred and observation were made over time until it dissolved. The same done but replaced in glass with filtered water and recordings also made. The experiment was repeated using sugar as solute and salt in different glasses instead of instant coffee. Overall reading and observation were made and recorded. Time taken to dissolve (minutes) Instant coffee Sugar Salt Tab water 5 minutes 30 minutes 10 minutes Bottled/water filtered 5 minutes 20 minutes 45 minutes In the consideration of the two solvents the rate of dissolving was higher in filtered water for instant coffee and sugar crystals but inverse for the salt particles in tap water than bottled water.DiscussionHydrogen Oxygen Hydrogen The chemical formula for water in molecules form consists of the atoms of hydrogen and one of oxygen, which is tightly bonded together than most of the atoms of substances and has ability for dissolving substances as solutesAccording to the dissolving abilities in experiment, the temperature of water, the size of solute particles and the rate at which is stirred affect the dissolving ability of different substances.Numerous substances are soluble in water, and few of these substances take apart into positive and negative ions in water which usually are made up of molecules that have ionic bonds while non-ionic molecules stay intact just in solution. Thus sugar dissolves easily in water and sugar molecules remain intact as sugar while in deionized water it easily dissolves due to the fact that the dissolved substance do not result in ions. The analysis of the two different solvents, instant coffee records the same time taken to form solution because of its particles while the salt and sugar behaves different in ionized distilled water, thereby, diffusion rate of salt crystals is higher in tap water due to the rate of its ionization of sodium chloride charged compound and sugar particles takes longer time.

A masterpiece of assignment by , written on 2020-03-12

My order went 3 hours late and I also went mad. Then the customer support team calmed me down and offered me a flat discount of 50%. However, I did get my order and chilled out as the work was exactly what I requested. Next time I would place my order a bit sooner to save any trouble.
